Mbah Moen Passes Away; NU: Indonesia Loses Its Role Model

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The secretary-general of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest Muslim organization, Helmy Faishal Zaini expressed deep condolences over the passing of NU’s Mustasyar (advisory board) KH Maimoen Zubair or Mbah Moen on Tuesday, August 6.
The renowned ulema passed away in Mecca, Saudi Arabia at 04:17 local time. He was at age of 90 while performing hajj pilgrimage.
“Boards of NU hereby say innalillahi wainna ilaihi rojiun. We express deep condolences. Indonesia is losing one of its role models, leaders and community protectors,” said Helmy in a written statement, Tuesday, August 6.
Helmy explained the Indonesian nation is losing the legend, charismatic cleric. He then called on the public, especially NU people, to hold a prayer (Gaib prayer) and recite al-Fatihah for the late figure.
“May he is placed in the most glorious place beside Allah SWT,” Helmy added.
Maimoen Zubair was a national figure who was determined to fight for Islamic and Indonesian values. He previously asserted that the independence of Indonesia was God’s blessing upon people’s sincere struggle in eradicating colonialism.
“Hopefully, we can take the precedent left by KH. Maimoen Zubair as a lesson to face future’s challenges,” Helmy said.
