TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A doctor from Persahabatan General Hospital (RSUP), Agus Dwi Susanto, has stated that the N95 type face mask, or respirator, is quite efficient to avert air pollution in Jakarta.
“There are many kinds of face masks, but considering the poor air quality in Jakarta, a respiratory mask is the best way to block even the smallest particles in air,” said Agus in Jakarta, Monday, August 5.
Agus, who is also the head of Department of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine at the University of Indonesia, explained that the N95 respirator can block 95 percent of airborne particles, and so it is suitable to wear in the capital, instead of a regular mask.
According to Agus, the respirator, which is usually in the form of round, white-colored and thicker, can filter finer particles of pollution (2.5 microns). While the simple mask, available in green, blue, and various other colors, is only able to block large pollution particles (10 microns).
Agus further advised people not to reuse the mask. "Just use it once, and don’t wash it because the pores will widen, so it will be useless. Also, use it only for six to eight hours," he said.
Wearing a face mask, especially respirators, is effective in reducing the risk of diseases caused by exposure to air pollution, from minor illnesses such as colds and sore throats to heart disease, strokes, and lung cancer.
Besides, this respirator mask is not too difficult to find, it usually available in various mini markets and pharmacies, although the price is more costly than the ordinary ones at around Rp13,000 per piece.
