PLN Predicts Rp90bn Losses from Blackout in 3 Provinces

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The PLN strategic procurement director 2, Djoko Raharjo Abumanan estimated the company would lose Rp90 billion from the massive power outage in Jakarta, West Java, and Banten. The figure was calculated should the electricity tariff was set at Rp1,000 per kWh on average.
“The minimum losses is Rp90 billion, not to mention if there is a fine,” said Djoko in Gandul Load Control Center, Sunday, August 4.
Djoko said that the need for electric power in Jakarta, West Java, and Banten during weekends amounted to 22,000 megawatts, and so there was 9,000 MW potential loss per hour.
“Let’s say the loss is 9,000 MW which is multiplied with 10 hours blackout and the average rate Rp1,000 (kWh),” he said.
Therefore, he added, the loss was predicted to reach 90,000 MW, and so it was multiplied with the average tariff per MW at Rp1 million.
Meanwhile, the state-run company’s electricity sales reached Rp300 trillion per year, and Java alone contributed 80 percent of which. Yet, the massive blackout on Sunday occurred in 50 percent of income areas of Java.
Earlier on Sunday, August 4, blackouts affected three Indonesian provinces, namely West Java, Jakarta, and Banten at 11:48 a.m. This incident caused by several troubles in the PLN's extra-high voltage 500 kV transmission of Ungaran - Pemalang.
