TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Transportation Community (MTI) deputy head Djoko Setijowarno opined O-Bahn, a mass transportation combination of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT), is a kind of public transportation suitable for the new capital city. The government, he added, could build the route without disturbing the existing traffic.
“It’s better to set up O-Bahn in the new capital. This transportation is not applicable to be constructed in a densely populated city,” said Djoko when contacted on Friday, August 2.
The Transportation Ministry previously planned to build the rail-based bus transportation system in several metropolitan cities, such as Jakarta and Surabaya, considering it is more efficient than the Transjakarta bus.
According to Djoko, traffic in such a big city that operates O-Bahn will be congested as its operation requires special lanes that will likely cut streets.
Meanwhile, the government can design transportation development for the new capital since the beginning. “This will depend on the design,” Djoko said, adding that the government could build the lanes in the city’s inner ring road.
Previously, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) head, Bambang Brodjonegoro, said that the provision of public transportation facilities is categorized as the first project in developing a city, otherwise, the impact would be fatal.
“The budget will be higher if the development is carried out late,” said Bambang on Thursday, August 1. He hoped the new capital city could be a pilot project of the public transportation development plan.
