TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Environmental Agency of Bekasi predicts that the volume of trash completely clogging the Kali Bahagia (literally translates as the Happy River) in the area of Babelan reaches 400 tons. This is an accumulation of piles of trash along a 1.5-kilometer area that is measured to be 50 centimeters thick.
“We will set up an emergency response and have communicated with the Military Command (Koramil) to work together with the police and the community to clean up the garbage here,” said the area’s village secretary Mawardi to journalists at the location on Monday, July 29.
The mass-community cleanup will be done without the help of heavy machinery since the river sits deep inside a packed neighborhood of illegally-built houses which makes it nearly impossible to use heavy equipment.
Mawardi revealed that the trashes clogging the river, which is also known as Kali Busa, mostly consist of inorganic and plastic wastes which was scattered almost everywhere inside the river.
The flow is currently clogged at the portion of the river located at the Babelan District, Tarumajaya, and Noth Bekasi.
