TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has decided to temporarily close the Indonesian (RI) Embassy in Sana’a, Yemen for security reasons.
The closure was noted on Presidential Decree No. 18/2019, which was ratified on Wednesday, July 17. This was conducted over concerns about the political condition in the country that hindered the diplomatic missions and duties, according to the Cabinet Secretary on its site Setkab.go.id.
Since March 2015, the country faces a civil war between the pro-government military faction led by Saudi Arabia-UAE and the rebels Houthi. This ongoing conflict has claimed dozens of thousands of people and brought the poorest country in the Middle East on the brink of starvation.
Several countries had closed their embassies following the worsening situation. Last February, the United States shut down its offices.
According to the Decree, the operational and services of RI Embassy in Yemen would be moved to Indonesian Embassy in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, and would be reopened after the condition is declared conducive and safe.
