TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo commanded the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to continue its pursuit in educating the public regarding Indonesia’s risky geographical position within the ring of fire, including a possible megathrust.
“In terms of potential megathrusts, just mention it as it is, it is not spreading distress if there are the actual possibilities of it happening. Tell that and announce what we should do, that is educating the public,” said Jokowi in his opening speech at the BMKG coordination meeting in the State Palace on Tuesday, July 23.
He also called for the BMKG to improve its communication with local authorities across the nation, especially if it is related to disaster risks of certain regions that are undergoing development programs.
“Tell it as it is so it can be a reference for regions that are prone to disasters,” the president said.
Jokowi hoped that such education and exposure to possible scenarios will help the public and regional governments better prepare for possible disasters in the future.
