MRT Jakarta CEO: Transport Connectivity will Reduce Pollution

12 July 2019 12:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe connectivity enhancement of MRT Jakarta station with other transportation and the pedestrian facility is considered helpful to reduce the city’s air pollution.

PT MRT CEO William Sabandar expressed hope the implementation of transit-oriented development (TOD) would encourage people to shift from using private vehicles to riding on mass transportation.

“The more people using public transportation, the number of private vehicle use will drop. This will cut pollution,” said William to Tempo, Thursday, July 11.

According to William, his corporate had drafted the TOD concept for the construction project of MRT phase 2. The project prioritizes ease of accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

Therefore, the public will be attracted to reach MRT stations using zero-emission vehicles. “People will automatically use [bicycle or walking] to access stations that will contribute to lessening emissions and congestion,” he added.

PT MRT Jakarta and Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP) Indonesia had previously signed an MoU regarding a study on intermodal integration and optimization of connectivity of pedestrians and cyclists along MRT corridors.
