TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Police's cybercrime unit has arrested two people suspected as scammers and hackers. The perpetrators hacked and abused the WhatsApp account of Tempo Inti Media CEO, Toriq Hadad.
"We have arrested the scammers," Adj. Sr. Comr. Roberto Pasaribu, chief of the police's cybercrime sub-unit, said on Friday, July 12.
Roberto said that the scammers were arrested in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Wednesday, July 19.
"They will be flown to Jakarta today," he said.
Roberto said the hacker is Nakir. He took control over Toriq's WhatApp a WhatsApp account and committed frauds whilst claiming to be Toriq. The other suspect, Sukmawati, withdrew the money that victims transferred through ATMs.
Toriq Hadad's WhatsApp account was hacked some time ago. The messaging app was then used by the scammers to commit frauds; asking money from the people in Toriq's contact list.
"There were two events that I think caused my number to be hacked. This afternoon someone contacted me via WhatsApp, claiming to be a college friend. But the number looked like an unsaved contact. He told me that I could save his number if I give him the notification that would be sent via chat. I was very suspicious," Toriq said on July 1.
