Jakarta Transport Agency Comments on 15-hour Odd-Even Policy

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo said he is still waiting for the study results by the Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency (BPTJ) to extend the odd-even policy to 15 hours a day as previously applied during 2018 Asian Games.

The agency, Syafrin added, will also analyze the advantages of the policy. “We will conduct a comprehensive study from the BPTJ’s research, on the aspect of the economy, social, etc.,” Syafrin told Tempo today, July 12.

Unlike the multi-sports event that lasted for a month, he added, the private vehicle restriction will be applied for a long term should it is ratified. Therefore, the impact must be carefully considered. “I haven’t received the study by BPTJ.”

On Wednesday, July 10, BPTJ head Bambang Prihartono explained the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) study found that the modal share for public transportation dropped by 12 percent following the increasing number of private vehicles; both the four-wheel vehicles and motorcycles. The high number of private vehicles in the capital also resulted in worsening air pollution and congestion.

Bambang then suggested the city administration re-implement the odd-even policy that was carried out during the 2018 Asian Games. The traffic scheme was valid for 15 hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
