TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Jakarta District Court on Thursday, July 11, sentenced Ratna Sarumpaet to two years imprisonment. The sentence is far less than what the prosecutor had originally sought.
The public prosecutor initially charged her six-years imprisonment. Ratna was accompanied by four of her children throughout the sentencing hearing.
The panel of judges saw Ratna had violated Article 14 (1) of Law No.1/1946 on spreading lies and intentionally spreading a scandal among members of the public.
The judges deemed Ratna had proven to have spread a made-up story of herself being a victim to physical abuse by a group of men, which she claimed at the time had caused her face to swell in several areas.
