TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The judges of Bandung District Court sentenced Bahar bin Smith to a three-year prison sentence yesterday, July 9. The court convicted the preacher guilty of physically abusing two teenagers who were his students.
The court also ordered Bahar to pay a fine of Rp50 million.
"If the defendant cannot pay, the fine can be replaced with an additional prison time of one month," Judge Edison Muhammad said when reading the verdict.
The verdict received by Bahar bin Smith was lighter than what the prosecutors demanded. In the previous trial, the prosecutor demanded six years imprisonment plus a fine of Rp50 million—substitutable with three additional months in prison.
Bahar bin Smith said through his lawyers that he might consider appealing. "I will leave it to my attorneys," he said.
