6 New Findings of May 22 Riots from Police Investigation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police Investigation team has announced new findings of the riots on May 21-23, 2019. The rally protesting the result of 2019 Presidential Election turned to riots at several locations in Jakarta.

Nine people were killed in the incident and hundreds were injured. Besides, the police arrested 447 people and named them as suspects of the incident called May 22 riots.

The following is the list of new findings by police investigation:

1. The riots were designed by eight groups

"There are certain groups who nearly designed the riots on May 21-22, 2019. There are eight groups who carried out their action on May 21 and 22," said National Police Chief of Public Information Bureau, Dedi Prasetyo, at his office in South Jakarta, July 5.

2. The allegation on the involvement of political parties and mass organizations

The investigation result showed that four groups were commanded by people from political parties with initials PN, PS, and GR; mass organizations from Serang, Tangerang, Cianjur, Banyumas, Tasikmalaya, Lampung, Aceh, dan Jakarta; until the supporters of Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno, namely RMP, Garda08, and Rumah Aspirasi Prabowo-Sandi.

3. Police are searching for a field-commander of the riots

The police are searching for YN, one of the nine names identified as provocateurs. "YN is highly suspected as the commander of the riots based on the narration he said; he said ‘fire, throw, war,’” said Dedi, adding that other names with initials DW, AA, F, R, MY, AH, IG, FA, were already detained.

4. Police identified the characteristics of the shooter

Dedi said his office has identified the shooter of one of the nine casualties during the May 21-22 riots. They obtained the characteristics from a witness who saw the shootings.

"Based on the witness statements, there is an individual with a height of around 175 cm, straight long hair, thin, wearing a belt, and fired the shot with the left hand,” Dedi said.

5. Brimob members were detained for 21 days after found guilty

The police have imposed disciplinary act to 10 Brimob members who were found guilty for committing violent acts at Kampung Bali, Jakarta on May 22.

“They were placed in a special detention room for 21 days,” Dedi said.

6. Perpetrators used non-organic weapons

Jakarta Metro Police Chief of criminal unit Sr. Comr. Suyudi Ario Seto confirmed that the weapon used at May 21-23 riots was not organic weapons owned by the police and TNI. It was known from the police autopsy to four of the nine victims and ballistic test of projectile found in the bodies of Harun Al Rasyid and Abdul Azis.
