TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the fishery sector continues to stay above the average national GDP and agricultural GDP. She hopes that the GDP increase will sustain.

The minister made the statement when presenting the achievements of her ministry's programs in the first semester. Susi said that fisheries GDP growth rate in the first quarter of 2019 was 5.67 percent; higher than the national GDP growth rate of 5.07 percent.

"We hope that GDP in the following years, with an improving economy, can be above 6 percent, nation-wide, perhaps 6.8 percent. I think that would be something we all will be very happy about," Susi said in her office in Jakarta, Thursday, July 4.

She said that growth in GDP also shows how curbing and combatting illegal fishing does not make the fisheries economy backward or stagnant.

"On the contrary, it improves and strengthens the sector—purely with the force of domestic fleets. Almost everything is the result of domestic cultivation," said the minister.

Susi Pudjiastuti said that the captured fisheries production continued to increase. In the first quarter this year, production rose 3.03 percent compared to Q1/2018.
