TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called for everyone to unite again as fellow countrymen.
“The presidential election has passed and [the result] was finalized by the Constitutional Court (MK). Don’t let different political preferences, for example between neighbors, push us away from each other,” said Widodo in a press release from the Presidential Secretariate’s Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media on Thursday, July 4th.
He said that differences, especially political ones, are natural and that everyone must be open to respect the differences and preserve the sense of solidarity.
“Let us all embrace one another again and unite as fellow countrymen. Whatever the religion or ethnicity may be,” said the president, who reminded the steep challenges that face Indonesia ahead and the importance of facing them together.
“Other countries have built advanced infrastructures while we’re still quarreling and hating each other, which can get us left behind,” he reminded.
