House Suggests Indonesia Cooperate with Singapore on Extradition

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives' Commission III has advised the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to establish extradition cooperation with Singapore as many corrupt individuals have stashed funds in Singapore.

"In a meeting with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, I suggested that the government establish cooperation on an extradition agreement with Singapore and Malaysia as many Indonesian criminals and corruptors are stashing their money in these two countries," a member of the house, Muslim Ayub, said onWednesday.

Last week the House of Representatives' Commission III had agreed to establish cooperation on extradition between Indonesia and Iran, he added. Such a cooperation agreement is also likely with neighboring countries such as Singapore.

The House of Representatives' Commission III has asked the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to make an effort to establish extradition cooperation with Singapore, according to him.

"The Ministry of Law and Human Rights has responded positively and will explore the possibility of extradition cooperation with Singapore," he noted.

The Commission III had told the ministry to continue approaching Singapore to sign an agreement, Muslim added.

Such an agreement should be explored even if Singapore has previously refused it, according to him.

"The proposal for such cooperation has been submitted by Commission III to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. It is expected that in the near future the ministry will approach Singapore even though they have refused it," he said.
