Indonesia Eyeing on Exporting Skilled Migrant Workers to Japan

25 June 2019 22:22 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri is eyeing on sending 70,000 specified skilled workers (SSW) to Japan, which constitutes 20 percent of the country’s demand for highly skilled migrant workers.

“Within the next five years, we are eyeing on taking 20 percent (70,000 workers) out of the total of 350,000 specified migrant workers that Japan needs,” said Minister Hanif in between signing the Indonesia-Japan Memorandum of Cooperation at the Manpower Ministry Headquarters on Tuesday, June 25.

Hanif mentioned that this partnership is a chance for Indonesia to meet Japan’s demands for Indonesian workers that are within the productive age.

Japan, he said, has greatly contributed to the future of this program by providing internship opportunities in Japanese corporations.

“Indonesia has sent 81,302 participants up until May of 2019,” said Minister Hanif.

The line of work available for this program consists of nurses, building cleaning and maintenance management, tools, and machine components industry, industrial technicians, electronics, and information sector.

Other sectors include the construction industry, ship-building industry, the aviation industry’s vehicle maintenance, the hotel, agriculture, fisheries, and the food and beverage industry.
