TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Caffeine helps us get through our daily routines or stresses at the office, but besides its benefits, consuming too much caffeine can definitely negatively impact your body.
“Caffeine helps keep our brain awake. Caffeine overconsumption makes it difficult to sleep through the night and makes you want to take daytime naps. And if you don’t take that nap, it causes problems for someone’s daily activity,” said Dr. Prasna Pramitha, Internist – Allergy, and Immunologist at Premier Bintaro Hospital.
In a certain dosage, caffeine could reduce headaches but would have an opposite effect if consumed too much, which could cause nausea.
Consuming more than 500 milligrams of caffeine a day basically opens the possibility for you to suffer from caffeine poisoning which symptoms can be felt with headaches and fatigue.
Moreover, abusing caffeine consumption could also cause indigestion as drinking too much coffee can act as a laxative.
“Coffee contributes in the gastrin release or hormones that accelerate the activities of the colon through increased movements that can cause diarrhea,” said Prasna.
In the worst case, caffeine overconsumption also causes high blood pressure by causing the artery to stiffen and tighten that could eventually lead to more health issues.
