Anti-FPI Permit Extension Petition Yet to Reach its Goal

20 June 2019 12:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of people who signed the Change.org petition inhibiting the permit extension of Islam Defenders Front (FPI) has yet to reach its goal as the government’s organization permit extension period expires today.

The initial goal of gathering 500,000 did not improve from 482,711 online signatures for the past five days. The person initiating the petition is Ira Bisyir, who considers the FPI as a radical group that promotes violence and is a supporter of defunct hard-line religious group HTI.

“Please spread the news of this petition to preserve Indonesia’s peace,” said Ira in the Change.org petition.

Furthermore, today marks the deadline for FPI to hand over its provisions in order to extend its permit as a mass organization.

“All of the files needed are prepared. It’s on progress,” said FPI’s lawyer Sugito Atma Pawiro to Tempo on Wednesday, June 19.

According to Sugito, the 20 items FPI needs to submit has been prepared and will be submitted by the organization’s secretariat.

Previously reported, the Kemendagri announced that FPI’s permit will expire on June 20, 2019, and that the organization must attach a number of legal documents, one of which is an official statement letter of not affiliating with any political party among many other files regarding the technicality of an organization.

“It’s been prepared and if there are requirements that are not met, the Ministry of Home Affairs will notify [FPI],” said Sugito.

The organization’s chairman Sobri Lubis on June 6 expressed the organization’s zeal to extend its permit.
