Papua's Sarmi Regency Hit by Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sarmi Regency in Papua was rocked by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake during the early hours of Thursday at 00:24 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) which originated 45 kilometers southwest of Sarmi City.
The earthquake is predicted to be caused by the Memberamo cesarean based on its epicenter and the depth of its hypocenter of 11 kilometers. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said Memberamo’s characteristic could be observed by the cesarean’s oblique-thrust plate movement.

Head of BMKG’s earthquake and early tsunami warning Daryono said that the activity is mainly because there were pressures from the northern and southern part of the area. However, he also detected a tendency of the land's movement to be sinistral.
The Mamberamo cesarean zone is famous among geologists which is also known as Mamberamo Thrust or the Maberamo Deformation Zone (DFZ).
An aftershock was felt at 00:43 WIB. There has yet been any report on the number of casualties and damages buildings sustained.
