TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained by the French police over allegations of corruption related to the decision to select Qatar as host of the 2022 World Cup. The former France captain had previously been sanction by FIFA ethics committee.
Sky Sports reported that Platini was arrested after investigations on how Qatar won the rights to host the next World Cup.
Platini, who headed the UEFA from 2007, was part of the host selection process which took place in 2020. Five years ago, the Daily Telegraph disclosed that prior to Qatar's win, Platini (63) held several meetings with former Asian football official Mohammed Bin Hammam before the vote.
Because of the case, Platini was banned from football since 2015, which foiled his plan to run in FIFA's president selection.
