Yogyakarta's Renowned Malioboro Implements Car Free Zone

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malioboro area has started implementing a car-free period as of today. The inaugural car-free test starts from 06:00 and will last to 21:00 Indonesia Western Time (WIB).
The local Yogyakarta Transportation Agency also implements traffic engineering during the car-free period which will be held every Tuesday from now on. Tuesday Wage was chosen for it is the day where local street vendors are absent throughout Malioboro.

“The means of transportation allowed to enter the Malioboro area are restricted to horse carriages known as ”andong”, rickshaws, bicycles, Trans Jogja bus fleet, ambulances, certain state-official vehicles, police patrol car, and cleaning service vehicles,” said the Head of Yogyakarta’s Transportation Agency Sigit Sapto Raharjo on Monday, June 17.
However, some areas will still be allowed for motorized vehicles to travel through for the sake of minimizing traffic congestion in surrounding areas such as parts of Malioboro’s Sosrowijayan Street and Dagen Street.
Yogyakarta Mayor Haryadi Suyuti said that the Yogyakarta City Administration and the provincial government is thoroughly prepared to apply the Malioboro semi-pedestrian concept.
