TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi invited the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) to Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, June 12. He reminded them about the situation of the trade war between the United States and China that could positively affect Indonesia.
“Don’t see it as a huge problem, but in my opinion, there is an opportunity we can seize amid this escalating trade war,” said the President during his opening speech of the session.
The former Solo Mayor admitted economic issues must be soon improved after the 2019 general elections ended. Albeit Constitutional Court was still processing the election dispute, the current situation of trade war must be taken advantage of.
He viewed Kadin and HIPMI could stand in the front line taking benefits from the situation. For example, the slot of Chinese products that could not enter American markets can be taken by Indonesia to expand its business capacity.
Jokowi mentioned China used to supply textiles products. “Now that they’re in [trade war], we can fill in,” he said.
In addition to garment and textiles, Indonesia could export electronic up to furniture products post this trade war. “I think we must observe such opportunities in detail and make the best use of it to increase our exports,” he concluded.
