Customs Foils Couple`s Attempt to Smuggle Drugs into Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Customs authorities promptly thwarted a drug smuggling attempt by arresting a married couple looking to bring in the contraband into Indonesian territory via the Mota Aim border crossing checkpoint in Belu District, East Nusa Tenggara.
"It is true that we have arrested two people believed to be a married couple on Wednesday (May 29, 2019) on charge of bringing drugs into the Indonesian territory," Head of the Atambua Customs and Excise Office Tribuana W remarked in the East Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of Kupang on Thursday morning.
However, he declined to reveal details of the type and quantity of drugs that the married couple had attempted to smuggle into the Indonesian territory.
He confirmed that the drugs had certainly been taken from neighboring Timor Leste and intended for distribution in East Nusa Tenggara.
"I am optimistic that you would cooperate. Do not report the details first, as we are yet in the process of investigating the matter," he stated.
Information pertaining to the arrest of the married couple will be made available only on Friday, he stated.
Chief of the Drugs Unit of the Belu Police Resort First Inspector Ivans Drajat gave confirmation on the arrest of the two foreign citizens.
"However, we have yet to determine whether the drugs smuggled through the border crossing checkpoint is crystal meth or ecstasy pill," he revealed.
The suspects are under detention at the Belu Police Resort along with the contraband.
