TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 62-year old U.S. national identified as Prasetio Tjondro died on Mount Semeru on Sunday, May 19, after the elderly man complained about a stomach ache during his hike in the previous morning.

Prasetio began his journey on Friday, May 17, in a group consisting of 21 people that were divided into three seven-man teams. The groups were accompanied by local porters and guides throughout the journey.

A spokesman of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Syarif Hidayat, revealed that Prasetio Tjondro hiked along six Indonesian nationals who were in his group.

“This group checked in to the Ranu Pani checkpoint and were briefed on the Mount Semeru hiking procedures,” said Syarif on Monday, May 20. Prasetio bore a United States passport.

The team then set up camp at Ranu Kumbolo, but then on Saturday morning of May 18, Prasetio complained of experiencing a stomachache and asked for diarrhea medication from a fellow hiker who was a doctor.

Unfortunately, Prasetio’s condition did not improve, prompting other members together with their porters to report his condition. A rescue team was deployed on Sunday, May 19, at 00:28 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) and later received news from other members on Prasetio’s passing. Prasetio’s body was then evacuated to the East Java Lumajang hospital and sent to Yogyakarta where his family members awaited.
