Arrested Terrorists in Central Java Are Ex Syrian ISIS Members

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian anti-terrorist force Densus 88 reportedly apprehended seven suspected terrorists from Central Java on Tuesday, May 14, who had past affiliations to the now-defunct ISIS group in Syria.
“We have the data on the ones that departed for Syria, who were affiliated to the ISIS network in the Philippines and many more,” said Police Spokesman Insp. Gen. M. Iqbal at the Indonesian police headquarters yesterday, May 16.
He says that six of seven who have traveled to Syria were former ISIS members where they were tasked to handle logistics, analyst, and documentation of logistics distribution in Syria.
Unlike the police mobile brigade corps (Brimob), according to Iqbal, the Densus 88 acted on extensive intelligence reports and does not put forth coercion but adopts a much persuasive approach and keeps in mind on rehabilitating the terrorists.
Despite not declassifying the number of Indonesians returning to Indonesian soil after joining ISIS, he assured that some of them have been deradicalized.
