TEMPO.CO, Medan - A Corpse flower Amorphophallus, that was planted eight years ago at the greenhouse laboratory of Medan State University (Unimed), has finally bloomed.

The university's Dean of Mathematics and Science Faculty, Martina Restuati, said that the plant, also ca needs at least five years to fully bloom at the greenhouse. "It is possible if it is supported by a good environment," she said in Medan, Monday, May 13.

The students can now directly observe and study the blooming carrion flower as it is always mentioned in Biology class and awaited by its students.

The inflorescence of the flowering plant can reach 2.5 meters in height with a width of 1.5 meters.

"Stinking flower is rare and unique. The plant has various flowers with different aroma and function," she added.

The corpse flower is different from Rafflesia, even though both flowers emit an odor of rotting flesh. Rafflesia is a parasitic plant that can only live depending on the parent tree. Meanwhile, the titan arum has its own tubers, stems, and roots so it can feed itself.

The flower that is native to Sumatra can grow from seeds, which will need dozens of years to bloom. It can also grow from tubers with a shorter time to bloom, depends on the age of the tubers found in the wild.
