TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is enhancing supervision for drug smuggling through package shipping services. Although this is not a new modus of operandi (MO) it is definitely still used frequently by drug dealers.
BNN's deputy of eradication Insp. Gen. Arman Depari said the agency had busted several smuggling attempts using this MO last year. Allegedly, smuggles prefer using this method as it has smaller risk of being caught.
On Monday, BNN thwarted the smuggling of 400 kilograms marijuana using this MO. The cannabis was shipped from Aceh and addressed to Pancoran Mas, Depok City, using a Cargo DSi expedition service.

A smuggling attempt with a similar method was also foiled by the West Jakarta Resort Police. The police confiscated 120 kilograms of methamphetamine sent from Malaysia through a shipping company.
"They choose this method because it is considered cheaper and timely," Jakarta Police PR chief Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said. "But we will not be fooled."
Argo said that the police have data on all shipping service companies operating in Indonesia. If there are suspicious items sent through the shipping company, the police can easily trace them.
