TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asserts that Jakarta will remain as the country’s economic hub despite the president recently announcing future plans that will see Indonesia’s capital city moved.
“With or without having the central government in Jakarta, this city will continue to be the country’s main economic center,” said the governor in a meeting with foreign partners at City Hall on Tuesday, April 30.
He continued to explain that the classic problems faced by Jakarta will continue to exist, such as the 17 million vehicles listed as Jakarta license plates. Anies said that only 141,000 of them are operated by the central government.

“This means the challenges will remain and will need to be handled with or without having the need for central government to be in Jakarta if the move is eventually executed,” said the governor.
Following a meeting last Monday, President Jokowi decided to move the capital to another location outside of Java Island. It is reported that the decision was based on concerns for Jakarta’s northern area’s geographic frail, environment, and the seemingly non-solvable problem of traffic jams.
The capital city move currently remains as a long-term plan and will be thoroughly studied by The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and Public Works and Public Housing Ministry (PUPR).
