Gov't Affirms New Policy on Online Ojek Takes Effect on May 1

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTransportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi affirmed the new Ministerial Regulation (PM) No. 12 of 2019 on online-based motorcycle taxi or locally known online ojek will take effect on Wednesday, May 1.

The Ministerial Decree (Kepmenhub) No. KP 348 concerning procedure for the calculation of service cost using a motorcycle for the public through the application will also be valid starting tomorrow.

“So we inform this because procedures, tariffs, and every subject noted in the regulation will be implemented starting tomorrow,” said Budi Karya during a press conference in his office, Tuesday, April 30.

Budi Karya explained the two policies were expected to provide a basis for the operation of ride-hailing service, particularly related to safety as it is vital in the transportation sector. The minister also hoped the regulations would become the protection both for the public and drivers.

Transportation Ministry earlier announced the issuance of new regulation on online ojek in which regulating the safety protection for motorcycle users. Besides, the government and operators released the tariff based on three zones on March 25.

The zone I included areas of Sumatra, Java (except Jakarta Greater Area), and Bali, while the zone II included Jakarta Greater Area (Jabodetabek), and zone III included Kalimantan, Sulawesi, NTT, Maluku, Papua, and NTB. In general, the new tariff increased by 10 to 20 percent from the previous rate.

The minimum fare for the ride-hailing service in the zone I was set at Rp1,850 per kilometer, zone II at Rp2,000 per kilometer, and zone III at Rp2,100 per kilometer. As for the maximum fare was set at Rp2,300, Rp2,500, and Rp2,600 per kilometer for zone I, II, and III respectively.
