TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Ignasius Jonan said the fuel cost of the electric car was 40-percent cheaper than that of Premium gas-fueled cars. Jonan conveyed the statement during the launching event of Blue Bird’s electric vehicle (EV) fleet on Monday, April 22.
Jonan said the state-run electric company PLN currently provides a discount of 30 percent for electricity refueling at 22:00 until 06:00 local times. Thus, the initial tariff Rp1,467 per kWh is cut to around Rp1,000 per kWh.

“The car is quite pricey but the energy cost is cheaper by 50 or 40 percent than using Premium gas,” he added, asserting that the government supported the use of electric-fueled cars for public transportation in a bid to suppress the emission.
Blue Bird, as one of Indonesia’s renowned taxi companies, has launched its electric vehicle fleets. The company’s high-end service Silver Bird will utilize the Tesla Model X 75D while the regular service Blue Bird fleet uses the BYD 96. The service will be available starting in May 2019.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the government offers incentives for public transportation that willing to convert their fleets into electric-powered vehicles in the form of zero percent tax for luxury and import goods.
Additionally, the government is calculating the electricity tariff for the electric car. “We still calculate it to be at Rp1,000 per kWh, but they must not face loss for sure, they must be backed up,” Luhut added.
