Earth Day; Fashion Label SMM Holds Plastic Waste Installation Art

23 April 2019 10:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In commemoration of Earth Day, Indonesian fashion brand Sejauh Mata Memandang (SMM) held an exhibition and design installation in Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta. The event dubbed Laut Kita or "Our Ocean" highlighted the theme of plastic waste that mostly washed away to the ocean and damaged the country’s sea ecosystem.

SMM, in collaboration with Felix Tjahyadi as the exhibition drafter and Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik (Plastic Bag Diet Movement), determined to educate the public on the worrying condition of plastic waste in the archipelago. The picturesque installation showed enormous plastic waste that could not be degraded for hundreds of years.

SMM Founder dan creative director, Chitra Subiyakto, expressed her concern on the sea condition that might affect the life-sustainability of the future generation. “I’ve started to worry about the condition of our ocean since last year. I’m eager to hold an exhibition to raise public awareness when I read an article that by 2050, there will be more plastic waste than fish,” said Chitra in Plaza Indonesia, Central Jakarta, on Monday, April 22.

The exhibition is aimed at providing an experience for the public on the dirty and in large amounts of plastic waste in the country. “The concept is initially brought up from my experience while learning about the danger of plastic for our body health. We want to describe our experience and make people feel the current condition of the sea,” Felix explained.

Visitors can witness the natural beauty of Indonesia from the collection of photos and documentation by Dian Sastrowardoyo, Nicholas Saputra, Jay Subyakto, and Jez O’Hare in the first area of the exhibition.

In addition, visitors will be exposed to infographic facts and data about plastic pollution and art installation on the impact of plastic waste for the sea ecosystem, as well as the solution to prevent and lessen the disposable plastic waste. The last area is set for the change movement.

“All plastic waste and pollution will return to us. So we make a petition, a promise to change starting today,” Felix added.

The Laut Kita exhibition, that is opened on Earth Day until June 16, 2019, combines traditional fabric arts of Sejauh Mata Memandang (As far as the eye can see) and the damage of plastic waste in a bid to encourage people to be more aware of the pollution in the country as to preserve the beauty of Indonesian arts.
