Penang Court Acquits Employer of Murdered Migrant Worker

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is appalled by the decision of the Penang Supreme Court to acquit MAS Ambika (61) of all charges on April 18.

Ambika was the employer of late Indonesian migrant worker Adelina Lisao, who died after falling victim to an abusive employer.

Foreign Affairs Ministry announced to the media today that the government presented significantly compelling pieces of evidence in court, but was forced to face the facts that key witnesses were not yet presented in court before the verdict was made.

“The Indonesian government completely respects Malaysia’s law and hopes that an investigation into the verdict, as mentioned by the Malaysian Attorney General, could soon bear fruit,” said the Foreign Affairs Ministry in its statement.

While waiting for further developments, the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Penang appointed a lawyer to be present in the next trial of the abuse against Indonesian migrant worker Adelina Lisao.

The Ministry and the KJRI in Penang have consistently fought for the victim’s family to be compensated and have her rightful wage be paid by the employer.

The KJRI has also helped finance and send home the deceased's body back to her family and continued to monitor the case’s legal proceedings.
