Psychiatrist on Legislative Candidates' Post-election Breakdown

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reports of numerous legislative candidates, locally called “caleg”, suffering from mental breakdown, depression, and disorders have started to emerge following the recapitulation of the 2019 General Elections votes.
Psychiatrist from Alam Sutera Hospital, Andri, views this as a common occurrence as this phenomenon is a form of psychological defense mechanism of a human faced with failure.
“The symptoms include anxiety, hopelessness, anguish, animosity, up to suffering from hallucinations and delusions often called a psychotic condition,” Said Dr. Andri, SpKJ, FAPM.

Andri warned that this mental disorder was something that could become permanent, and that it was a reaction to acute stress or some sort of adjustment disorder.
He explained that legislative candidates suffering from these symptoms may show improvements in less than two weeks and return to their normal state of mind.
However, he said the level of the symptoms was closely related to a person’s psychological and genetic backgrounds. He added if the person’s condition did not improve in two weeks, it could reduce the person’s quality of life.
