TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Notable Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figure Saifullah Yusuf, known as Gus Ipul, calls for public figures to refrain from expressing statements that can cause rupture following the heated 2019 presidential election.
“Everyone must hold back and with all due respect, this issue cannot be solved by being equally adamant,” said Gus Ipul to journalists in Surabaya, April 18.

He said that he truly believes Jokowi and Prabowo Subianto, as prominent national figures, would be able to calm members of the public after the elections officially end.
“Hard work must be appreciated as a democratic process. In the end, there will be a winner and a loser. I’ve been in the position as a winner and loser, but this is a step that must be followed and respected,” he asserts.
Gus Ipul suggested legal procedures to resolve issues regarding the election instead of mobilizing masses or “people power” as what has been echoed in public space recently. He also called for East Java kyai elders to hold a meeting that will help calm the currently tense situation.
