Mount Merapi Spews Kilometer-High Ash Cloud

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG) reported that Yogyakarta’s Mount Merapi has spewed ash clouds on Tuesday, April 16, up to 1.2 kilometers headed to the upstream of Gendal River.

BPPTKG Head Hanik Humaida in a statement revealed that the ash cloud was detected by their observatory from 00:00 to 06:00 local time. There were also two incandescent lavas streaming 600 meters down to Gendol River.

Two earthquakes were also detected by the agency’s equipment during the time.

The agency also reported that winds in the area are blowing Southeast and South with air temperature up to 15-20.6 degree Celsius and 74-79 percent air density.

The BPPTKG is currently maintaining the status of Mount Merapi at alert level II and recommends for people to avoid the area for recreational use in a three-kilometer perimeter.
