TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Twitter user @selfeeani recently discovered an Indomie plastic wrapper that washed ashore on a beach in Malang, East Java. The pictures she posted clearly shows the special edition instant noodle wrapper commemorating Indonesia’s 55th Independence Day anniversary back in 2000.
The plastic wrapper only sustained deteriorating colors after it’s believed to have been floating for 19 years.
The ocean waste was originally discovered by Fia, before going viral by @selfeeani’s tweet which was accompanied by a caption highlighting the irony written on the wrapper.
“Later in August, Indonesia will celebrate its 74th independence day anniversary. But this morning, I discovered an Indomie wrapper that celebrated Indonesia’s 55th anniversary,” said Fia. “So, this wrapper floated for 19 years across the ocean until it was washed ashore.”
Fia tweeted her discovery on Monday, April 8, and was last seen retweeted by Twitter users for over 74,000 times, with one of it being the country’s Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.
Minister Susi Pudjiastuti is known as one of many vocal public figures who actively remind the public on the dangers of relying on disposable plastic products.
