TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) will launch Merah Putih tsunami detection buoys on April 10, 2019, around Mount Anak Krakatau area. The BPPT head Hammam Riza said that his side is ready to commence the program.
“We, BPPT, would ask for prayer to obtain ease and smoothness in placing buoys in Mount Anak Krakatau areas on April 10,” said Hammam on Sunday, April 7. “The buoy plant will be carried out by using BPPT’s research vessel KR Baruna Jaya.”
Hammam explained the placement will take two to three days in the sea. After that, Baruna Jaya will conduct a survey. Throughout 2019, BPPT planned to spread 3 buoys for areas of Mount Anak Krakatau, western coast of Bengkulu, and southern area of West Java.

Merah Putih buoy is the third generation system to detect a tsunami and is expected to be resistant to vandalism. Other than buoy, Hammam added, BPPT will install cable base tsunameter (CBT) to equip the detection system.
“CBT is necessary to detect near field tsunami,” he said, adding that BPPT will coordinate the installation of three buoys and CBT as well as the security with related institutions, viz. the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Indonesian Armed Force (TNI), and Police.
Hammam further appealed to all people to guard Merah Putih tsunami detection buoy and refrain from vandalism acts for the sake of all safety.
