State-Owned Shipbuilder PT PAL in Search of New R&D HQ

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned ship manufacturer PT PAL and state-weapons manufacturer PT Pindad are reportedly scattering to look for separate locations to be used as their new research and development headquarters across Indonesia.
PT PAL Engineering and Maintenance Director Sutrisno said that the current location management, that is deemed worthy for the 50-year battleship project, still stays in Surabaya. Other regions in consideration include Tanggamus, Lampung.
“Building facilities and its workforces is a gradual process,” said Sutrisno in a discussion on defense industry at Bandung Institute of Technology on Tuesday, April 2.
He explained that construction of facilities includes area developed for launch sites and a port spending from 5 to 20 years in development, not to mention preparing the workforce for 2-10 years. PT PAL currently has 1,542 employees.
The emphasis on spreading the locations in safe areas was stated by PT Pindad technology and development Director Ade Bagdja.
“Never lay all the eggs in one basket,” he said.
In total, PT Pindad has a total area of 232-hectare land spread in two locations to produce general weaponry, special vehicles, industrial products, ammunition, and explosive devices. Pindad also employs 2,541 people in the two plants.
