TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gerindra Party spokesman Dirgayuza Setyawan said its presidential candidate, Prabowo Subianto, was not against globalization, but rather prioritized Indonesia’s national interests.
Dirgayuza admitted that Prabowo often received criticism for his jargon “Indonesia first”, which many deemed was inspired by United States President Donald Trump.
Dirgayuza made the statement ahead of the fourth presidential debate that would focus on several topics, among them international affairs.
“The principle is one thousand friends are too few, one enemy is too many. But in international trade, politics, well Indonesia’s interest must come first,” said Dirgayuza to Tempo on Thursday.

He added that Prabowo Subianto and his running-mate, Sandiaga Uno, had prepared a vision to make Indonesia an exporter in the food and renewable energy sectors.
Dirgayuza said Indonesia would need good bargaining power to become strong in the current of globalization, thus, the Prabowo-Sandiaga pair sought to better the country’s economy.
“Only with strong economy will we have strong bargaining power,” he said.
