TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI-Indonesia Safari Park) in collaboration with Hino Indonesia established a conservation program in protecting endangered raptor Javan Hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi). The deal signing took place in Safari Park, Cisarua, Bogor, on Thursday, March 28.

Safari Park director board official, Biswajit Guha, hoped the partnership will help to preserve Indonesia’s wealth of biodiversity, that is ranked second in the world.

“One of the country’s invaluable asset of biodiversity is Javan hawk-eagle. Its population remains at around 300 to 500 species. It continues to drop and faces extinction,” said Biswajit in a written statement received by Tempo on Thursday, March 28.

Due to such worrying condition, Biswajit said, Indonesian government tapped the endemic as a protected animal under Presidential Decree No. 4 of 1993. “Javan hawk-eagle is one of the national animals,” he added.

Hino Indonesia general manager, Bagas Krishnamurti, said the conservation cooperation of the species consisted of two major programs, namely breeding and research on the animal reproduction.

“This tie aims at increasing the population of Javan hawk-eagle that presently declining, so the next generation can see Javan hawk-eagle in the future,” Bagas underlined.

According to Bagas, Hino Indonesia initiated the agreement with Taman Safari Indonesia as the conservation institution with over 30 years experience in ex situ conservation for the sake of preserving Javan hawk-eagle.
