TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Law, and Security Affairs Wiranto said that a total of 593,812 joint personnel of Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police would be deployed to secure 2019 General Election.
Wiranto conveyed the statement after a coordinating meeting in light of the election security at his office in Jakarta today, March 20.
According to Wiranto, the results of the evaluation and surveys showed that several regions still have a potential disturbance in implementing the election.
State officials attended at the meeting were National Police Chief Tito Karnavian, TNI Commander Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, State Intelligence Agency (BIN) deputy chief Lt. Gen. Teddy Laksmana, the General Election Commissioner (KPU) head Arief Budiman, and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu). The meeting was also established via a video conference with those officials in each province.
Wiranto said that the meeting was a preparation to secure the public electoral election slated to commence on March 24 until April 13, as to build a synergy between security officers and KPU and Bawaslu as the election organizer. “The government presents [at the meeting] as a facilitator,” he added.
To date, the minister continued, the national security is relatively good. However, security measures are required to maintain the condition ahead of the election on April 17.
However, Wiranto admitted there were several threats that would beset the election which was viewed from the Elections Vulnerability Index run by Police, KPU, and Bawaslu. The minister had ordered authorities to identify and overcome the threats.
“We will impose strict acts toward whoever beset the election,” he said, demanding public participation in securing the election despite the high number of personnel assigned.
