Australia Fears Possible Retaliation Post Christchurch Shootings

20 March 2019 07:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australian ambassador to Indonesia Gary Quinlan voiced his concern of possible retaliation against Australian nationals and government following the tragic mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Gary’s fears are justified considering that the terrorist behind Christchurch attacks is known to be Brenton Tarrant, a right-wing extremist Australian national.

During his visit to the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) headquarters on Tuesday, Gary Quinlan said that retaliation is a major concern since he claims that many extremist groups have stated their readiness to strike back, such as from ISIS and Al Qaeda.

Though unconfirmed to be linked to the Christchurch shootings, the most recent example of a possible retaliation is the terror attack in the Netherlands that unfortunately killed three people. “It may possibly be retaliation, but we have yet confirmed that,” he said.

Gary Quinlan further said that the Australian government has issued a travel warning for its citizens overseas, which include Indonesia following the tragic Christchurch mosque shootings.
