Sentani Flood Death Toll Rises to 89 People, 74 Missing

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe death toll of floods in Sentani, Jayapura, gradually increases. The latest information issued by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) revealed that 89 people were killed and 74 others were missing.

“The joint SAR team continuously search for victims since it is expected many have not been founded,” said BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho during a press conference Tuesday, March 19.

The main emergency post outlined 82 out of 89 victims were killed by flash floods in Jayapura Regency, while 7 others were killed by landslides in Ampera, Jayapura city.

Sutopo explained a total of 1,613 personnel of the joint SAR team from 23 institutions were deployed to handle the disaster, including the searching for victims.

The number of missing people as reported by the family and the public amounted to 74 people; 34 from Milinik Village, 20 from BTN Gajah Mada, 7 from Inauli Residence Complex, 4 from Bambar Village, 2 from BTN Bintang Timur, 1 from Sosial, 1 from Komba, and 3 people from Taruna Sosial.

In addition, Sutopo added, as many as 159 people suffered injuries; 84 were severely injured while the rest 75 experienced minor wound due to flash floods in Sentani, Jayapura.
