TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the tragedy that struck Ethiopian Air on Sunday, Garuda Indonesia management spoke up on how the flag-carrier is operating the Boeing 737 MAX 8.
They assured that its pilots have undergone stringent simulator programs needed for pilots to qualify to operate the MAX series. Garuda Indonesia Commissioner Agus Santoso even claims the carrier has trained its pilots well over the standard set by Boeing.
“Garuda Indonesia trained pilots for the MAX 8 exceeding the standards set by Boeing itself,” said Agus in the Aviation Training & Education Conference held at Hotel Grand Mercure Harmoni Jakarta today, March 12.

He essentially suggests that Garuda had adopted a training standard to also comply with regulations issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This decision basically creates a double safety net to further qualify Garuda pilots upon operating the Boeing 737 MAX 8 that had only served for the carrier since December 2017.
The Commissioner’s statement is in response to the temporary grounding, recent tragedy of the fallen Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Sunday, and the crashed Lion Air plane that used the same type of airplane from Boeing.
