Mount Merapi Spews 1.5-km Hot Cloud Early Today

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi spewed 1.5 kilometers of hot clouds or locally known wedus gembel earlier today, March 12 at 04:56 local times for 150 seconds.

“The hot clouds were emitted up to 1,500 meters towards the upstream of Kali Gendol,” said Nur Kholik, an officer of Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Tuesday, March 12.

The distance, he explained, was monitored as still on a safe level. However, BPPTKG urges the public not to be within a radius of three kilometers from the crater of Merapi; except for disaster mitigation activities. The volcano status remained in Level II or Alert.

Mount Merapi had been in the Alert level status since May 21, 2018, which meant volcano eruption and lava avalanches would frequently occur. The public is appealed to remain calm and aware and follow officers’ instructions.

Based on the observation today for six hours, from 00:00 to 06:00 local times, the volcano was observed covering with white thin clouds as high as 20 meters from the crater peak. As seen from the CCTV, Mount Merapi spewed incandescent lava six times towards Kali Gendol with a maximum of 1 kilometer.
