TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Incumbent presidential candidate Joko Widodo or Jokowi earlier promised that he would issue a pre-employment card. The cardholders, who are unemployed people, would receive fund assistance.
“[The card] will be valid only for a certain period, it can be 6 months or a year. So cardholders will soon get a job. It does not aim at giving salary for unemployed people,” said Jokowi Sunday, March 10, before hundreds of his supporter in Festival Satu Indonesia at Istora Senayan, Jakarta.
The pre-employment card, according to Jokowi, is an attempt to alleviate unemployment. He said that the card would open opportunities for Indonesian youth to enter the working and industry realm.
The cardholders, who are graduates of high school, vocational school, or academy, would undergo vocational training ahead of time. The training could take place in the country or overseas. “We will provide incentives for those cardholders who have undergone the training but cannot get a job,” Jokowi added.
The pre-employment card stirred public polemic. Vice President Jusuf Kalla even criticized the program initiated by President Jokowi should the latter win in the upcoming presidential election.
Jusuf Kalla noted that such fund assistance program for unemployed people was applied commonly in developed countries with a small population. However, it could be started next year so long the State Budget has more budget for the program.
