TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry is still calculating the basic tariff for online ojek (motorcycle taxi) service providers; GoJek and Grab.
"We're formulating [the tariff] together, at least next week [it will be ready]," said the ministry's transportation director Ahmad Yani at his office in Central Jakarta on Friday, March 8.
According to Ahmad, the app companies have set the rate independently since there is no law regulating the tariff determination. At the end of this month, he went on, the ministry will issue a ministerial regulation (PM) exclusive for online ojek which also regulates the tariff formulation.
Afterward, the nominal of the tariff will be set through the Decree (SK) of Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi. "The minister will set the ideal tariff," Ahmad explained.
The prolonged conflict between the online ojek drivers and app providers started in August 2018, after the drivers demand the company to raise the basic passengers' rate following the increased living cost.

Go-Jek claimed it had risen the rate for its drivers in greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) from Rp2,200 to Rp 3,300 per kilometer, while Grab claimed it had risen the rate from Rp1,600 to Rp2,300 per kilometer.
Ahmad said that most of the drivers demanded the rate to be Rp3,000 while the company still set it at Rp1,600 until Rp 2,400. "The government takes the midpoint," he said.
Chief Public Policy and Government Relations of Go-Jek, Shinto Nugroho, said the set tariff was based on the field observation outside the peak hours. "Besides, there is also an additional fee for late-night service," he said, adding that they had set the highest tariff yet still competitive.
Meanwhile, Grab Indonesia Managing Director Ridzki Kramadibrata said the newest rate had increased the average rate per kilometer of above Rp2,000 gradually. In conclusion, Ridzki claimed, the average income of online ojek drivers had increased by 12 percent per month in the past three months through the improvement if its GrabBike, GrabExpress, and GrabFood services.
