TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted that high-intensity rain would continue to occur in several Indonesian provinces until next week.
The agency appealed to the public to be aware of flood, landslide, flash flood, strong wind, fallen tree, and slippery road. "This condition will likely increase until mid-March 2019," said the deputy of BMKG's meteorology unit, Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo, in a statement on Friday, March 8, 2019.
Potential heavy rain is predicted to hit several regions, such as from Aceh to Lampung, except for Riau; and also Kalimantan, Java, Southeast Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, West Papua, and Papua.
Mulyono continued to remind all ships passing the waters on the western part of Sumatra, Indian ocean areas in the southern Central and East Java until the western waters of Arafura Sea to be aware of high waves. "The high tide is estimated to be around 2.5 to 4 meters," Mulyono added.
BMKG further warned of potential land and forest fire during this transition period from rainy season to dry season in the eastern coastal area of Sumatra. "Particularly in the area of Riau and its vicinity," Mulyono noted.
Based on the Fire Danger Rating System (FDRS) data on March 5, 2019, the eastern area of North Sumatra, eastern Riau, Riau Island, eastern Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, North Kalimantan, the northern area of Sulawesi, and North Maluku have a high potential of land and forest fire.
