INDEF: Exports must be Competitive Following IA-CEPA Deal

6 March 2019 11:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) researcher Ahmad Heri Firdaus said that the latest Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) provides a chance to grow Indonesia’s superior export products.

He reminded that the product’s quality and competitiveness must be highly improved to be completely accepted by the Australian market.

“Is our products already competitive there? Even though it was granted tariff cut. Being competitive means that we can significantly improve exports,” said Heri in a press release on Tuesday.

Another challenge posed by the deal according to Heri is the Non-Tariff Measure (NTM) set by the Australian government to protect its domestic products.

”That’s what has hampered developing countries entering the market of developed countries. Are we prepared to face the NTM? That’s the homework needed to be worked on,” he said.

The IA-CEPA deal was inked by both countries on Monday, March 4, which will give both countries additional access in terms of services, investments, professional field service movements.
